Forensic Psychology Resource Center

The word ‘forensic’ is derived from the Latin word “forensis”. Forensics is defined as belonging or appropriate to courts of judicature. Psychology is the study of the mind and behavior of humans and human behavior. The two fields interlock psychology and law to form forensic psychology. Those in the field of forensic psychology work in environments that are clinical and forensic in nature.

A psychologist will treat traumatized individuals in a clinical environment. A psychologist that provides forensic services will report to the court the extent of the trauma. The forensic psychologist will present sentencing recommendations, treatment recommendations and provide answers to legal questions. In a clinical environment, a psychologist forms an empathetic relationship with the client. When the psychologist is tasked with evaluating from a forensic standpoint, the psychologist must analyze whether there is any deception or validity in the defendants behavior or state of mind.
